Scotland Vacations: Stranraer
The nation of Scotland is a great destination in which to take a week or two’s vacation. The nation is suitable for an extensive amount of varying vacations, featuring large expanses of pretty countryside with copious amounts of sites of outstanding natural beauty (perfect for mountain climbers, ramblers, hill-walkers, hikers and the likes). The country also features some of the most popular attractions, including, some of the most highly interesting museums and galleries in the United Kingdom, awe-inspiring sites, historical buildings, stately homes, fortified houses and castles plus much, much more. Below I examine Stranraer.
Stranraer situated in the district of Dumfries and Galloway in southerly Scotland, the town is renowned for it being the place where you can catch a ferry to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Regrettably the majority of folk do not get to investigate some of the tourist attractions in the surrounding countryside and Stranraer itself. This fact is a little bit of a puzzle, if you arrive at the port, and reserve a room in a bed and breakfast in Stranraer, a day or two earlier you could get to see a selection of the visitor attractions prior to sailing to the city of Belfast.
There are a selection of places to see in the port of Stranraer including the Castle of St John in the heart of the town. The Castle of St John was erected at the very start of the 16th century as a residence for the Laird of Wigtownshire, Ninian Adair of Kilhurst. The building underwent renovation, during eighty eight/eighty nine, by Wigtown District Council who opened it to the public in 1990.
Another place to visit close to the town of Stranraer is the gardens at Castle Kennedy. The castle is the centrepiece of the gardens which are located , between two lochs, on a hill( unfortunately it is no longer possible to visit the ruined castle. The landscaped gardens extend across an area of seventy five acres. If you would like you can buy plants from a store which has reared them from seed collected in the garden.
A further beautiful attraction well worth seeing is Glenluce Abbey, not too far from Stranraer. Even though Glenluce Abbey is in ruins( in truth the most ruined of 3 of monasteries found in the south western region of Scotland) it features an incredible fifteenth-century Chapter House. Other places worth taking the effort to visit include, Port Logan, the Mull of Galloway, the Macharsand Portpatrick.
